Mistakes happen during a news interview. So, what do you do when you stuff up? It’s a common question during our media skills workshops, so here are a couple of pointers for pre-recorded news interviews:
1. Journalists accept mistakes or you (the talent) losing your train of thought.
2. Stop your answer, tell the journalist you would like to do it again because (my response wasn’t clear, I was wrong, etc).
3. Ask the journalist to repeat the question, giving you time to gather your thoughts.
4. Get back on track to your agenda by injecting your key messages.
Always remember your interview may have taken five minutes, but only 20 seconds may be broadcast. Always correct a wrong answer during the interview otherwise you will forget and it may be the 20 seconds you didn’t want broadcast.
