Media interviews can be challenging for those not prepared or understand how engagement with journalists is played out. Here are some common mistakes:
Long responses: Don’t speak longer than 50-60 seconds for an answer. Long responses cannot be used in broadcast stories and leaves you open to being taken out of context.
Too much opinion: Provide evidence rather than your opinion (unless you are a commentator). Always add proof-points or examples to your answer.
Ignoring the basics: Know the topic inside-out. This includes telephone numbers, website addresses and all the basics you would be expected to know.
Failing to research: Research the media outlet and understand the audience.
